manhattan. >> he was big for new york. he always understood the media. knew how to get attention where it needed to be. >> changed that city. right now let's get a check on your morning roads. still early but mike inouye hard at work. >> i'm tracking folks who were hard at work all night. road crews out here. we're looking at oakland with a light volume of traffic as you might expect at 4:31. typical road crews between coliseum and 980 as you head into downtown. losing a couple lanes at a time and no slowing there. watching the bay bridge as well. a smooth drive. in the foreground you see incline and taillights heading toward treasure island and at the top of the screen folks out of the city on the lower deck. you can see a light volume of traffic. there is a bit of construction over on the east shore freeway not causing slowdowns and we're always watching the city by the bay because we got a big game coming up with san francisco playing on sunday. we have to focus. we all have to focus. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. we'll have more on that coming

up in just a bit. rising concerns in the east bay this morning where nearly every city dealing with a double digit leap in car thefts. the latest stats from the alameda county regional auto theft task force show the top two most stolen cars are honda accords from 1990 to 1997 and honda civics from 1990 to 2000. officials say those models can be stolen in under 30 seconds and that parking lots and business plazas close to freeways are some of the major hot spots for those crimes. it's what happens after the theft that has police worried. >> they use stolen cars to commit robberies, burglaries, auto theft leads to everybody. it leads to dope. it leads to weapons. it leads to identity theft. i was in hayward a few months ago following a girl in a stolen car. watched her park it, get out and steal mail out of mailboxes and get back in. we took her off and she was a major identity thief.

>> chp recommends using steering wheel locks or detachable steering wheels to help protect your car. nudists in san francisco protesting the city's ban on nudity which went into effect at midnight. earlier this week on tuesday a u.s. district court judge dismissing a lawsuit by the nudists but said they could return to court if the city enforces the ban in a way that stifles a political message. an attorney representing the nudists say their goal is to be cited by police so they can claim their rights to protest politically are being violated. the protest will take place at noon on the steps of city hall. nasa will do a second round of data collecting to learn more about air pollution in the bay area. yesterday a plane that looks like a fighter jet was flying over interstate 680. nasa says it wants to understand where air pollution comes from and how it moves. a peninsula city right now being honored for taking a stand that was very unpopular about

four decades ago. san mateo was one of the first cities to publicly support a combat unit in the vietnam war. 45 years later that symbolic act continues. the city leaders skyped with troops from the 101st airborne in afghanistan late last night. the chat part of a celebration of san mateo adopting the unit during that vietnam war. back in 1967, a sergeant wrote a letter to his sister requesting that she ask the city council to adopt the unit to help boost morale. two weeks later the city approved that proposal. >> i had accomplished what he had asked me to do and he knew that. >> he was killed in action and the story here -- let me find that action. people in san mateo continue to

when asked yesterday about this, two players denied participating in that video. they say they did not realize that video was intended to combat gay bullying. the city of san francisco is getting ready for the super bowl on sunday and they want to make sure that all of the celebrations stay safe. city officials don't want to see the same violent celebrations that broke out after the giant's win in october. some in the city plan to avoid the street parties all together. they know that fan revelry can turn violent fast. he watched giants fans turn their attention to a muni bus smashing windows and lighting it on fire. he tried to stop the vandals but the crowd turned on him. >> people just smashing in windows and i just remember going up to them and grabbing them and shoving them off and saying this is not us. this is not what we do. >> he was left with a broken

nose, concussion and a chipped tooth. san francisco police and the sheriff's department say they will have extra patrols on duty just to monitor those crowds. as the big day nears, everyone is getting in on the 49ers fever including the san jose sharks. >> they are looking and feeling good during last night's game a goal scored and then celebrates doing a kaepernicking. nice work. the flex appeal. well played. the sharks are doing it working magic. they have also posted that video on their website. players wishing the 49ers good luck. sharks on fire. won the game 3-2. remain undefeated at 7-0 for the season. of course if you want to kaepernick or just cheer or eat your wings and have a cold beverage, check out nbc bay area for all things 49ers. journalists on the field and in the locker room and at the hotel. we're stalking the 49ers.

4:43. a court battle between the u.s. government and the world's largest beer maker. the justice department is suing to block anheuser bush from merging with mexico's largest maker. the $20 billion deal would bring together popular beers like budweiser and bud light and corona. the merger would give anheuser bush control of the market and allow it to raise beer prices. the brewing company says it will continue its fight in court. netflix today branching out into new unchartered territory.

the los gatos company launching house of cars. that's a new tv show that it created. the political drama stars kevin spacey. a big hollywood star as a congressman. netflix hoping the new venture will draw in viewers. >> if they're going to compete in the entertainment business as it keeps growing and changing, they'll have to start doing original content. >> netflix very serious about this one. the company has spent $100 million for 26 episodes and it's releasing the first 13 starting today. later this year netflix will release new episodes of the comedy classic "arrested development." the monthly jobs report due out in less than an hour impacting wall street. we turn to jackie deangelis. good friday morning, jackie. >> good friday morning to you. that's the super bowl on wall street every month. ahead of the jobs report we've got futures higher as investors

are waiting to get that data out. meantime, it's expected to show that another month of tepid hiring occurred as companies continued to hold back on adding new workers. forecasts calli ining for payro to rise. unemployment seen holding steady at 7.8% for the third straight month. we're also going to get data on consumer sentiment, manufacturing and construction spending and earnings from exxon mobil, chevron and merck the dow lost 39 points but the dow had its best january since 1994. the nasdaq fell a fraction to 3142. apple is blocking java software on mac computers. they can run them on most commuters but last month the department of homeland security

al roker, beach blanket babylon. going to be a party. hillary clinton is serving her last day as secretary of state. she'll say good-bye to the state department employees in a ceremony before leaving. later this afternoon massachusetts senator john kerry will be officially sworn in to take over the post. this morning a remembrance being held in mountain view's nasa ames research center marking ten days to the year the space shuttle "columbia" exploded. observances also being held at the arlington national cemetery and a wreath laying will take place at the kennedy space center down in florida. it is 4:50. our super bowl coverage continues next with beyonce sound check. >> she sounds real good. check that. plus, a super bowl party with a

you're looking live right now at pictures from turkey where a suicide bomber has reportedly blown themselves up outside the u.s. embassy. right now two people confirmed dead. several others are hurt. this bomb is said to have gone off on a side street right next to the embassy. we'll continue covering this and monitoring this all day long and give you new information as we get it into the newsroom. the bay area of course has spent a lot of time spotlighting 49ers in the buildup to the super bowl on sunday but new orleans the city itself also taking center stage here. for many this is the first real good look at the city since hurricane katrina. after all, the super bowl is set

good morning. breaking news out of turkey this morning where at least two people are dead outside the u.s. embassy following a suicide bombing. turkish news is reporting a pair of security guards were killed in that attack. several others were hurt. there's no word if any americans were among them. we'll of course continue to follow the story and bring you updates as soon as we get them. breaking news in new york city where overnight former mayor ed koch died from
